>Hello Sohib EditorOnline, you must be a lover of seafood, especially fish. But, have you ever tried tekwan, a traditional soup dish from Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia? Tekwan is usually made with fish as the main ingredient, but did you know that you can make tekwan without using fish? In this article, we will guide you through the process of making tekwan without fish, step by step.
Tekwan is a traditional soup dish from Palembang, a city located in South Sumatra, Indonesia. This dish is usually served as an appetizer or as a main course. The soup is made from a mixture of fish broth, pounded fish, and tapioca starch. The pounded fish is usually made from tenggiri (mackerel) or other types of fish.
Why Make Tekwan Without Fish?
For those who do not eat or like fish, making tekwan without fish is a great alternative. This dish can still be enjoyed by using other ingredients as a substitute for fish. In addition, making tekwan without fish is a healthy option as it reduces the level of mercury (a toxic substance found in some types of fish) in the dish.
Ingredients
The ingredients for making tekwan without fish include:
250g of minced pork
150g of peeled and deveined prawns
3 cloves of garlic, minced
2 tbsp of soy sauce
1 tsp of salt
1/2 tsp of sugar
100g of tapioca starch
2 litres of chicken broth
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp of pepper
3 stalks of scallions, sliced thinly
10g of dried shiitake mushrooms
2 tbsp of vegetable oil
1 tbsp of sesame oil
1 tbsp of oyster sauce
1 tbsp of cornstarch, dissolved in water
Chopped cilantro (optional)
Chili flakes (optional)
How to Make Tekwan Without Fish
Step 1: Prepare the Minced Pork and Prawns
Combine the minced pork, peeled and deveined prawns, minced garlic, soy sauce, salt, sugar, and pepper in a bowl. Mix well and let marinate for at least 30 minutes.
Step 2: Make the Meatballs
Add tapioca starch to the mixture from step 1. Mix well until the mixture becomes sticky. Take a small amount of the mixture and shape it into a ball (meatball) using your hands. Set aside and repeat until all of the mixture has been used up.
Bring the chicken broth to a boil. Add the dried shiitake mushrooms, vegetable oil, sesame oil, and oyster sauce. Stir well. Add the meatballs and let cook until they float to the surface. This should take around 5 minutes.
Step 4: Add the Beaten Eggs
Pour the beaten eggs into the soup slowly, while stirring the soup gently in one direction. This will create strands of eggs in the soup.
Step 5: Thicken the Soup
Add the cornstarch mixture to the soup to thicken it. Stir gently until the soup thickens. Turn off the heat and add the sliced scallions.
Step 6: Serve
Serve the tekwan hot, garnished with chopped cilantro and chili flakes (if desired).
